SonicWeld Rx®

With SonicWeld Rx®, the KLS Martin Group has developed a path-breaking system for craniofacial surgery that can also be used for pediatric trauma treatment and cancellous bones. It is stable, resorbable and considerably easier to handle than other systems, thus sparing you time and money.

After placing a completely resorbable SonicPin Rx made of pure PDLLA (a 100% amorphous material) onto a predrilled hole, the pin is vibrated by means of exactly defined ultrasonic frequencies. This liquefies the pin, which in turn penetrates into the bone structure, including cavities that would be beyond the reach of conventional screws. It is no exaggeration to call this a real “knitting” process. The resulting three-dimensional anchorage guarantees excellent stability. Thanks to its unrivaled flexibility, the SonicWeld Rx® pin can also be used in close quarters and under difficult conditions (e.g. at an angle). The system is equally suitable for cancellous and cortical bone structures.

Thanks to the unequaled body-compatibility of the PDLLA (poly D-L-lactic acid) base material, any residues are degraded fast and without any complications.

Customized Implants (Stereolithography)

A completely new service offered by the KLS Martin Group is the production of patient-specific implants. Such personal implants are particularly useful for covering large-surface and complex cranial defects.

Based on CT scan data, our engineers generate a stereolithographic model to simulate the defect. In a next step, the surgeon determines the dimensions of the required implant and proposes potential fixation/suspension points. Thereafter, the precision work starts on the computer, with grid lines being drawn across three-dimensional coordination points. This results in a surface that comes as close to the patient’s preoperative clinical situation as possible. The implant is then manufactured from sheet titanium, using a deep-drawing tool specially designed for the patient. Together with the implant, the surgeon also receives the stereolithographic model.

Such individual implants guarantee perfect esthetic results along with maximum stability. Time savings are guaranteed as well because no bending of plates or meshes is necessary in this case.
