More about Prof. Dr. Dr. Nils-Claudius Gellrich

Prof. Dr. Dr. Nils-Claudius Gellrich is holding a director and chairman position at the Hannover Medical School, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, in Hannover/ Germany, since October 2004.

Starting in 1982, he studied both dentistry and medicine at the Christian-AlbrechtsUniversity in Kiel, Germany. After acquiring his license as D.M.D. in 1987 and as M.D. in 1989, he started his specialist training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the RuhrUniversity Bochum, Germany, in 1990.  He obtained his board certification for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in January 1994 and the qualification in Regional Plastic Surgery in 1996.  In 1997 he became the deputy of the chairman at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg.  In the course of his career, Prof. Gellrich was appointed three times to Chairman Positions at Maxillofacial Surgery Departments, i.e. Frankfurt, Hannover, Zürich. He is very active in research with 287 pubmed-listed papers; his major research interests are focusing on tissue engineering or prefabrication, computer-assisted planning using virtual models in craniofacial surgery and intraoperative navigation for complex reconstructive surgery and patient-specific implants.  Prof. Gellrich is an experienced national and international lecturer and teacher. He has been invited as speaker at numerous scientific meetings and conferences world-wide and is faculty member and chairman at multiple national and international conferences, workshops and courses, especially on osteosynthesis, reconstructive craniofacial surgery, microvascular reconstruction, dental implantology, patient-specific implants and functionalized implants.

Abstract

Secondary orbital reconstruction might be indicated in congenital or acquired deformities involving the orbit and periorbital structures developing after trauma, ablation or inflammation with either no previous or partially or completely failed previous surgical repair. Secondary orbital reconstruction is one of the most challenging and fascinating fields in reconstructive craniomaxillofacial surgery and has tremendously changed over the last 30 years in terms of analysis, planning, biomaterial selection for reconstruction, surgical techniques including approaches and quality control via computer assistance and digital technologies. Today all advances in modern medical treatment are summarized and represented in secondary orbital reconstruction. Reconstructive orbital surgery thus became the medical field spearheading all reconstructive surgical specialties in terms of use of DICOM data, computer assistance, change towards individual patient-specific solutions and establishing digital workflows for adequate quality control during all phases of treatment, i.e. pre-, intra- and postoperative. There is hardly any field in medicine that profited so much from technological innovations and modern biomedical manufacturing, where today patient-specific implants play a key role in the treatment of secondary orbital reconstruction.

Within this webinar different views on secondary orbital reconstruction will be given including the complex interaction with the periorbital tissues and outer frame. Special attention will be given to analyze and understand how to approach a case of secondary orbital correction and what are the key elements of treatment to achieve a good outcome.

Upcoming webinars of this series

2020-04-09 | Evolution of custom-made solutions in CMF surgery | Speaker: Nils-Claudius Gellrich

The webinar will take place on Thursday, April 09 2020, from 3 to 4 p.m. CEST.

What you will learn in this webinar:

  • The evolution of CMF implants from standard plates and screws to the newest types and generations of custom-made implant is illustrated.
  • Different indications are demonstrated to clarify the advantage of the evolutionary process of functionalized implants in CMF surgery.
  • A focus lies on implants for 1) tumor related reconstructive surgery, 2) primary and secondary orbital reconstructive surgery and 3) dental rehabilitation with implant borne restorations.

2020-05-14 | Individual patient-specific solutions for midface reconstruction, Speaker: Max Heiland

The webinar will take place on Thursday, May 14 2020, from 3 to 4 p.m. CEST.

What you will learn in this webinar:

  • We have sophisticated virtual planning tools and many possibilities to transfer individual plans to the surgical theatre using 3D-printed guides and patient-specific implants.
  • However, besides microvascular tissue transfer established techniques like local flaps and even anaplastology are still valuable parts of our therapeutic armamentarium.
  • How to use the variety of reconstructive possibilities to achieve the best possible result in individual patients.

2020-05-20 | Individual patient-specific solution for primary orbital reconstruction | Speaker: Alexander Schramm

The webinar will take place on Wednesday, May 20 2020, from 3 to 4 p.m. CEST.

What you will learn in this webinar:

  • Software developments for automatic bone segmentation of standard CT data sets dramatically reduce the time period for preoperative planning in virtual facial reconstruction.
  • Combining this tool with mirroring of segmented areas of the facial skeleton achieves instant virtual reconstruction and allows direct production of customized implants for complex orbital and midface defects.
  • The resulting virtual model together with intraoperative navigation and intraoperative CT imaging guides the reconstructive procedure and positioning of these implants to the desired result.
