Sternal Closure

The open heart operation has been a success. The final step left is to close the sternum. Sternal closure is now made easy by a new, innovative technique: Sternal Talon® from KLS Martin.

Implant versions

The system is available in a single and double version, sterile and separately packed. The single version is available in five widths (XS, S, M, L, XL) and the double version in two widths (S and M). 
Both versions are available in four foot plate depths: 11 mm, 14 mm, 17 mm, and 20 mm.
 

Application

A special ratchet mechanism ensures that the Sternal Talon® implants can be opened and closed with ease. Depending on the position of the three-position screw on the face of the implant, the mechanism engages or unlocks.

1. The width and thickness of the sternum are measured exactly to determine the correct size of the implants to be selected.

 
2. The opened Sternal Talon® is inserted at an angle of 45 degrees and then aligned parallel to the sternum. 


3. The three-position screw of the Sternal Talon® is rotated to the closing position. This engages the ratchet mechanism. A reduction clamp is then used to press the two halves together. Once the implant has been firmly closed, the three-position screw is turned to the locked position. This locks the implant securely.
 

If it comes to the worst, opening is fast and easy.

Thanks to the simplicity of the ratchet mechanism, Sternal Talon® implants can be opened easily in case of an emergency immediately after the operation.

High safety for high-risk patients

The revolutionary Sternal Talon®, made of biocompatible titanium, allows you to close the sternum immediately and securely while bone penetration is prevented at the same time. The special design of the system ensures that the forces involved are distributed across a large bone surface - a significant advantage, especially with regard to patients at high risk resulting from conditions such as morbid obesity, diabetes or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Moreover, the system is well suited for reconstruction procedures.
