Date | November 19 - 20, 2026
Venue | Mainz, Germany
Date | November 19 - 20, 2026
Venue | Mainz, Germany
Over two intensive days, this course offers a comprehensive overview of modern CO₂ laser applications in otorhinolaryngology, combining scientific background, international clinical experience, and structured hands-on training. This program is intended for ENT surgeons with prior experience in laser surgery or otorhinolaryngology. Participants benefit by refining precision in microlaryngeal, oncologic, and otologic procedures, enhancing surgical safety, and integrating efficient workflows for immediate clinical impact.
The first day focuses on the foundations and clinical applications of CO₂ laser surgery in ENT, emphasizing modern transoral and microscopic surgical techniques. Participants begin with an introduction to CO₂ laser surgery, followed by an overview of ENT indications and the learning curve for laser-assisted procedures. Clinical sessions cover laser chordectomy, transoral laser microsurgery for glottic cancer, and CO₂ laser use in various head and neck tumor locations. Additional lectures address laser applications in middle ear surgery and stapedotomy, as well as key aspects of postoperative management after laser interventions. Throughout the day, internationally experienced surgeons share practical insights, clinical case examples, and discussion points highlighting the benefits and challenges of laser-assisted ENT surgery in daily practice.
The second day is dedicated entirely to practical training and hands-on experience. Participants receive a detailed introduction to the laser system, followed by a briefing on workshop equipment, including microscopes and surgical specimens. During an extensive wet-lab workshop, surgeons work in small groups to practice microlaryngeal and open surgical laser applications under expert faculty guidance. The interactive environment lets participants refine surgical techniques, gain confidence in laser handling, and discuss procedural strategies with experienced users. The course concludes with a round-table discussion, a summary of key learning points, and certificate handover.
This course provides a focused, clinically relevant learning experience, ensuring that participants return to their institutions with enhanced technical confidence, a deeper understanding of CO₂ laser-tissue interaction, and refined surgical skills. The scientific chairman of the course is Prof. Dr. Christoph Matthias. He completed internships in the USA and England and subsequently held senior positions in the ENT departments of university hospitals in Berlin, Munich, and Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 2006, he was appointed as a Professor at LMU Munich. Before becoming the Head of the ENT Department at the University Medical Center Göttingen in 2007, he worked under the renowned ENT surgeon Prof. Wolfgang Steiner. Currently, he leads the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Medical Center Mainz.
