50 years anniversary in CMF surgery products
– our distractors

Some innovations begin with a smile – or with a tie pin.

The Micro Zurich Distractor did not originate in the operating room, but in the design of a tie pin: Our production manager for metal implants once created an especially small distractor – as a unique accessory. The delicate design impressed American colleagues, who spontaneously remarked: "Something that small would be perfect for newborns!"

That idea sparked the development of the Micro Zurich Distractor, which is now successfully used worldwide in clinical settings as the Micro Zurich II – a great example of how creative impulses can lead to innovative solutions.

As we celebrate 50 years of dedication to craniomaxillofacial surgery, this edition highlights our range of distractors. It all began with the "Berlin Distractor", now known as the Horizontal Distractor. From this first model, we have continuously expanded, refined, and adapted our portfolio over the decades to meet the needs of everyday practice.

How has our distraction portfolio developed up to now?

Today, our portfolio includes a wide range of specialized distraction systems that have contributed to the global adoption of the technique pioneered by the Russian surgeon Gavril Illizarov in craniomaxillofacial surgery. His discoveries on bone lengthening from the 1950s are now an integral part of modern CMF surgery. In many cases, distraction osteogenesis is considered the method of choice.

With our long-standing commitment to innovative CMF solutions, we have supported this development from the very beginning – with clinically proven systems, precise mechanics, and practice-oriented design. Our goal: maximum functionality with minimal invasiveness.

Thanks to new technical features such as the anti-relapse ratchet and the remote-release activator, we are now able to offer even greater treatment safety. At the same time, we are developing smaller, flatter systems that further enhance patient comfort.

Another milestone: IPS Implants® Distraction.

This solution combines our standard distractors with state-of-the-art IPS® technology. The result: individually adapted distractors – from digital planning to custom-made products.

We have developed a suitable distractor for almost every clinical challenge. Numerous publications confirm the clinical relevance of our solutions for users and patients.
