KLS Martin Group celebrates 130 years

A legacy shaped by passion and innovation

The KLS Martin Group is celebrating its 130th company anniversary this year – a significant milestone in the history of the long-established family-owned business. Under the motto “celebrating 130 years of passion,” the group is honoring not only its technological achievements but, above all, the people behind its success.

“Without the passion of our colleagues, KLS Martin would not be what it is today,” emphasizes managing director Christian Leibinger. “They are the ones who bring the company to life, drive it forward, and demonstrate every day what our commitment to ‘Surgical innovation is our passion’ truly means. This anniversary belongs to them.”

To celebrate this special milestone together, the 130th anniversary was highlighted and honored during the traditional summer festivals at the German sites. The anniversary will also take center stage again at the end of the year, during a large joint holiday celebration that brings together employees from all German locations.

From a watchmaker’s workshop to a global medical technology pioneer

The roots of the KLS Martin Group date back to 1896, when trained watchmaker Ludwig Leibinger founded a small workshop in Mühlheim an der Donau, Germany. What began as a local craft business has evolved over more than a century into a globally recognized provider of surgical solutions.

Today, the group employs approximately 2,700 people worldwide and generated group revenue of €518 million in fiscal year 2025. Despite its global presence, KLS Martin remains a fifth-generation family-owned company and continues to stay true to its regional roots.

Innovation rooted in tradition

From its earliest years, the company’s history has been defined by pioneering spirit, precision, and a continuous drive to improve surgical care.

  • As early as 1922, the company developed one of the first electrosurgical generators – a technological breakthrough that transformed surgical practice.
  • In 1975, KLS Martin entered the field of craniomaxillofacial surgery by developing miniplates. This innovation marked the beginning of a product segment that went on to become a global standard and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025.

Through continuous investment in research, development, and state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies, the KLS Martin Group continues this tradition today. The company’s commitment to supporting surgeons worldwide and enabling the best possible care for patients remains unchanged.

Looking ahead

Even after 130 years, the KLS Martin Group remains firmly focused on the future through new technologies, global strategic initiatives, and a clear vision. Areas of particular focus include digital solutions, robotic-assisted workflows, individualized implants, and sustainable manufacturing processes.

“We are not only celebrating our history – we are celebrating our future,” says Christian Leibinger. “Because the driving force behind everything we do remains the same as it was 130 years ago: passion.”
